Artist Statement
I have always had a deep urge to create the human figure. My art conveys the figure in my own form, and I am able to do that by working with clay. Clay is how I am able to breathe life into my sculptures. I mainly use clay because I love to work the clay with my hands and leave my mark in the forms created. I leave my clay rough and don’t pursue an overall smooth surface, allowing my pieces to have an uneven surface in order to make the piece more interesting and add depth to the clay. My current work reflects more of a natural look to the figures. I attempt to stray away from the classical style and create a more rough and natural body type. The figures I create have a sense of personality attached to them. I achieve this by giving the figures names and then building them up, which allows the name to shape the form. I want my figures to have a mystery to them but also allow the viewer to weave their own stories about these figures.
